Before you get your panties in a knot, hear me out! The Crowe Wildpuckers have been dominating our league for awhile now and we, the Crowe BarFlies, had a chance to knock them down a peg. Do I think they're evil? Of course not! They're like the older brother that beat you at EVERYTHING!
Before I start this mighty story, I wanted to mention a blog that I've started following (thanks again Tom and Stephanie). It's Hyperbole and a Half and it is one of the funniest blogs ever (so go check it out). Since this little corner of the intrawebs has gotten a little dull, I decided to try something different (you'll soon see why I don't draw my own pictures). Imitation is the highest form of flattery you know.
Well, here we go. I give you:
The night starts off like any other shuffleboard night, with one exception. Lexie and I made it to the bar EARLY! Sweet, an extra hour of drinking! Have I ever mentioned that waiting for practice to be over and the actual games to start is like watching paint dry? It's the longest hour ever, but I was happy enough to not be at work.
Finally, 8 o'clock rolls around and it's time to get the battle underway. The Wildpuckers had to put up first, being the home team and they chose Tom and Jed, both zero handicapped. So the BarFly strategy is to put up Lexie and Shelly, both 3s. The BarFlies start with 6 points without ever throwing a puck.
Tom starts chipping away at the crazy lead with 2 points in his first frame. But Shelly comes back with a 2 of her own. Ten frames later and the Wildpuckers have overcome a 6-point deficit to win the first game 15 to 10. Wow, it's gonna be a long night for the BarFlies.
Time for game 2 and we're up first. Patrick and I go up against Ken and TK, getting one handicap point. I draw first blood with 4 points but Ken fires back with 5. Patrick was able to hold Ken to a total of 4 points in the next 2 frames, which gave me the hammer (the last puck of the frame). I turned those hammers into points and in the 8th frame, Patrick scored 3 to give us the win 16 to 9.
So now we're tied with one win apiece. Stephanie and Hardee are up for the Wildpuckers against Dave and Roger for the Good Guys. We started with 3 handicap points and this game kept going back and forth. The longest game of the night at 14 frames ended up with the BarFlies winning 16 to 13. For the 4th game, we sent in Nathan and Steve to take on Kevin and Jeannette. After the 4 handicap points it only took our guys 7 frames to win this one 16 to 7.
The next game is crucial. We only need one more win to take down the mighty Wildpuckers. Can we do it?!?
The short answer... no. Mom and Bert go down to Tom and Kevin. Dave and I crash and burn against Ken and Hardee, who turn around and beat Margaret and Steve.
Damn it! We HAD them! Oh well, there's always next year! Anyway, the BarFlies and the rest of the league get two weeks off for the holidays. Once we get back in 2011, we're up against Hunter's Rocks.
Well, that was fun! I don't think you'll be seeing more drawings out of me, I just needed a change here at Shut the Puck Up! But you will probably continue to see stuff like this:
Anyway, I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and a fantastical New Year!
I play shuffleboard every Wednesday and blog what I can remember. Here is my story.

Moving on Up!
So is The Jefferson's theme song stuck in your head yet? Well it's stuck in mine!
So I took a couple of crappy pictures on Wednesday night to spice up this blog. The pictures were so crappy, that I decided to make them even worse! Enjoy!
While the totally awesome pictures load, let's talk about what I can remember from Wednesday night. I remember Lexie calling Keith a "puckist" because he kept hitting all of her red pucks off the table. I remember my beer tasting fantastic. I remember that the Crowe BarFlies beat the Stafford Ye "Olde" Puckers. That's right ladies and gents! The Crowe BarFlies have an official 2 game winning streak! Woohoo!
So this week we take on the first place Crowe Wildpuckers. Can the underdogs take down the reigning champs? Let's hope so!

And so it begins again...
Hello boys and girls and welcome to another post from Shut the Puck Up! Last week, our favorite shuffleboard team, the Crowe BarFlies, traveled many miles to a far away bar called Cozy Corner to take on the Cozy Corner I team for the first game of the second half of the season. So what happened? Let's find out!
![]() | |
Oh yeah! That's a hanger! |
Okay, okay enough with the... whatever it was I was just doing there. We won! Yay! But I'm getting a little bored with writing this blog. There are only so many ways I can retell a shuffleboard game. So and so played with what's her name and they beat that dude and the other dude. I'm tired of rehashing the team rosters (especially when we lose). It's boring for me to write and I'm sure just as boring to read.
So how do I make it fun again? I don't know. Maybe I'll start taking more crappy pictures with my camera phone like the one above, or maybe I won't. I'd still love to have a guest blogger write a post (or several) about their games or shuffleboard experiences. Help me out people? What do you want to read here?
Anyway, we take on Stafford Ye "Olde" Puckers (still one of my favorite team names, after ours of course) tonight and hopefully we can get a streak going. It'd be really nice to beat the second place team, but either way tonight's game will be fun!

Silly Me!
I totally forgot to write a post about the Crowe BarFlies last game of the half against Woodie's. My bad!
The date - Wednesday, November 10th.
The place - Woodie's Ice House
The challenge - keep our 3-game winning streak alive
First up for Woodie's is Rod and Lupe going against our Nathan and Bert. After a shaky start, the BarFlies settle down and win the first game 16-8, thanks to a 7 point frame from Bert. Next up for the BarFlies are Patrick and Shelly, who had a rough time against Tu and Lupe. We lost this one 3-16. Dave and I go up for the 3rd game and Stephen and Jade are our opponents. With no handicap points, we squeeze a win out of this one 16-12.
For the 4th game, Margaret and Lexie play for the BarFlies opposite of Stephen and Bob. Now this game got a little hairy, mainly because I, and some of my team mates don't know how to count. We have a rule in our league that you must play 6 different players by the 4th game. Over the years there has been some very heated arguments over this rule. Someone mentions to me that they have only played 5 players and we are in the 4th game. So I look down at the score sheet... count... count again and come up with 5 players (beer and counting do not mix). I stand up and announce (very sure of myself) that we have won this game (not the match) due to their lack of 6 different players. So they say they're players out loud, while I count AGAIN! Oops! 6 players. I'll go back to my seat now (with my tail tucked neatly between my legs). After all the laughing died down we got back to the game. The BarFlies lost this one 12-17.
The 5th game ends up pretty much the same way as the last. Bert and I lost against Tu and Lupe. Lexie and Nathan tried their luck against Jade and Jerry in the 6th but couldn't quite beat them. Woodie's won the match 4 games to 2.
Grrrr!
So we've had a week off and will have this one off too. Hopefully we can find our winning ways again!

Bye Bye Bye
This past Wednesday was the Crowe BarFlies Bye week, so Mom and I headed over to Hunter's Pub to watch our sister team, the Crowe Wildpuckers take on Hunter's Rocks. The Wildpuckers came out on top to make their record 6-1.
This week we are up against Woodie's Ice House for the last game of the first half. Hopefully we'll keep our winning streak alive!
Image by Oberazzi via FlickrOkay, so now that that's taken care of, I want to hear from you! Yes, you!! Since I can't seem to get anyone to write a guest post for me I've come up with this brilliant (HA!) idea. I'm going to try (most likely unsuccessfully) and come up with a weekly shuffleboard question and I want you to answer it in the comments. Ready? Here we go!
Pretty easy right? Can't wait to see your comments (hope I get at least one)...
**UPDATE** 12/13/10 - I never got a comment. Sad face.

So Nice We Did It Thrice
First up for the Crowe BarFlies was Dave and Patrick against Phil and Jean. This was a seesaw game that eventually we lost 13-15. Next up for the visiting team was Danny and Charlotte against Nathan and our birthday girl, Shelly. This one was a little rough and we go down 3-16. Steve and I take on Annie and Patty for the third game and in 6 frames, we have our first win of the night, 15-7.
Phil and Charlotte are sent in by the Sandblasters after Margaret and Roger are announced as our next players. With the score at 13-12 in the 11th frame after Phil scored 6 points, Margaret scores 3 to win it 16-12. For the 5th game, Danny and Jean go up against Bert and Lexie. This game started with no handicap points and the BarFlies hit their stride quickly. Bert and Lexie win this one 15-6. Time for possibly the last game. Margaret and I are picked to take on Charlotte and Annie. It took 12 frames, but Mom and I win it, 17-9 to end the match.
The Crowe BarFlies have finally started to click and it feels nice. This Wednesday is our bye week, so I'll be heading out to cheer for our sister team, the Crowe Wildpuckers. Hopefully, we can play better than the Texans after our bye week when we head to Woodie's next Wednesday to try to end this half of the season 4-4.

We're Baaaaaaaack!
We played the VFW Flyers at their bar and beat them in 5 games, which is wonderfully surprising because the BarFlies have never really had great luck over there. But we had two (not so) secret weapons - our rally rooster and our new cheerleader Kerry (who is required to attend every game now!).
First up for the Flyers was Peggy and Teresa against Patrick and Shelly. We started off with one handicap point but Peggy and Teresa quickly took the lead with a handful of points. But Patrick stormed back with 4 points in the next two rounds and Shelly finished it off with 4 in the final round to take the first game 15-7. Next up was Dave and Nathan against R.C. and Alma. This game went back and forth and just for the fun of it forth and back. But Alma scored the final blow and we lost this one 14-15. The VFW Flyers sent in Dee and Adolph Jr to play the third game against Bert and Margaret and this one turned out to be another marathon. A marathon that the BarFlies would win 15-14.
Tonight's game is against the Stafford Sandblasters, and well, we really want to keep our streak alive. So....
GO BARFLIES!!!

Return of the Rooster
That's right boys and girls! The Crowe BarFlies have joined the rest of the league finally, with a mark in the win column. So how did we do it? With a little help from our friend... the Rally Rooster.
Yup. I brought out the luck charm from last year to see if there was any luck left in it, and there was!! Do I think it was all the rooster's doing for our win? Of course not! But I figured it couldn't hurt!
We beat the Cozy Corner ClusterPucks 4 games to 2. And in true BarFly fashion, we came out of the gates swinging, winning the first three games. One more and we win! But, instead, we lost the next two. The sixth game was a scary one.
Roger and Patrick were up first against Marcus and Jerry and won 15-6. Next up, Nathan and I beat John and Valerie 17-11. Margaret and Bert smoked Lauri and Tori to take the third game 15-0. But Lee Lee and Tori returned the favor and beat Dave and Shelly 0-18. Patrick and Steve were up against Tori and Lee Lee but couldn't hold on and lost 11-16. My mom and I were up against Jerry and Marcus for the sixth game and at one point we were down 3-11. But somehow we managed a come back and won 16-11, giving us our very first win.
So now the BarFlies are 1-4 and looking to make it 2-4. But standing in our way are the VFW Flyers, who are tied for second place right now.
Go BarFlies!!

Any Ideas?
Yes. We lost. Again. Grrr! What's wrong with us BarFlies? It's almost more aggravating losing by only a couple of points (which is what is happening to us) then to get totally blown out of the water.
So now we are 0-4 after losing last Wednesday to Hunter's Rocks and I don't really think I can write anymore about it. We are (obviously) in last place... and it sucks a big one.
Next up, we take on the Cozy Corner ClusterPucks. I'd say I hope we win, but apparently it doesn't do much good. Come on BarFlies!!

Big 'Ol Fat Goose Egg
Yup. That's how many games we won. Zero. Nil. Nada. Nothing. Zip. Not a one. You know what the worst part about it was? We didn't play all that bad.
So why can't we win? I have no clue. Got any advice?
I looked back at last season's first 3 games and we went 1-2. So we are one game behind last year.
Okay BarFlies. That's enough losing. It's time to win. And it's off to Hunter's Pub to play against Hunter's Rocks. Let's win BarFlies. Let's win!

Battle Royale
It's almost time for the 0-2 Crowe BarFlies to take on the 1-1 Crowe Wildpuckers. Who will win? All I know is that it will be a fun night!

Deja Vu All over again
Well crap! The Crowe BarFlies took the Stafford Ye "Olde" Puckers to game 7! And what happened? We lost. Grr!!
We're up to our same old tricks again I guess. Didn't we start off last year on a losing streak? Hopefully we'll snap out of it soon.
Next up are the defending champs, the Crowe Wildpuckers. Great. So thanks to my genius scheduling abilities, we played the 2nd place team the first week, the 3rd place team the second week and just for shits and giggles, we play the 1st place team the 3rd week. Yeah, I'm that awesome!
But enough rambling, back to this week's game. We almost had them!
We lost the first game by, well we'll say a lot. Lex and Roger had a rough time against John and J.R. The second game didn't look much better, but somehow we pulled it out of the gutter. My partner Patrick and I played this one against Keith and Becky. At one point, we were down 14-3 and managed an impossible comeback to take it 18-14. I think I had a mini heart attack after that. Then it was time for another newbie to get his first win. Nathan and Dave played against Doc and Bear and beat them 17-10. Next up was Bert and Steve against Steve and Paul. The weird thing about this game was that the "Steve"s were the only ones who scored points. Odd. We lost this one 12-15.
Okay. So we are tied 2 to 2. We send Margaret and our newest player Shelly to play opposite Keith and J.R. They almost held onto this one but lost 13-16. Patrick and I go up again for the 6th game, this time against John and Paul. We win this one 15-12 and Patrick and I get to enjoy the rest of the night from the bench.
So here we are at game 7. The Ye "Olde" Puckers have Keith and Steve playing so we send in Margaret and Dave to get our last win. But Keith and Steve were too much for them and we lost 11-17.
We played a helluva match, in my opinion. So good job BarFlies! We'll beat them when they come to our house! But for now our sights are set on the Wildpuckers!
So GO TEXANS and GO BARFLIES!!

First Game Jitters
Well, the Crowe BarFlies started the season off with a... wait for it... loss. Damn!
I know right! Grr! What is it with us? It seems like we always start the season with a loss. Well, now that the losing is out of our system, there is only one way for us to go.
So we played the Cozy Corner I team and lost 2-4. We definitely tried. Our games were all pretty close.
So what do we do now? Honestly, I have no clue. We just have to keep playing and hopefully the luck will catch up with us.
Our next hurdle of this young season is a tough one. We have to travel to Stafford Ice House and play last season's 3rd place winners, the Stafford Ye "Olde" Puckers.
Come on BarFlies! It's time to start a winning streak!

Almost Time to Dominate
That's right, I said it... Dominate!
Our first table shuffleboard game of the new season is this Wednesday against Cozy Corner I, a team that we lost to twice last year. But with the BarFlies under new management (Go Lexie!), hopefully we can pull out a win. It'd be nice to start the season 1-0.
We've got most of the usual suspects coming back for another year, but we also have a couple of new faces (welcome to the BarFlies Nathan and Patrick!).
It's going to be a great season for the BarFlies... I can feel it!
GO BARFLIES!

A New Hope
Our new shuffleboard season starts in exactly one week. How exciting!
For anyone who's new here, I'm Amy and I play shuffleboard. Every (well almost) Wednesday, I, and the rest of the Crowe BarFlies set out to beat the other 8 teams in the SHSL. But there's an added twist this year... I'm a board member! That's right! I actually have responsibilities (scary!!) now to the league and all of it's members.
So, good luck to all the shuffleboarders out there (especially the other BarFlies!!) and to my fellow newbie board members Tom and Lexie. I know this will be a great year!
And for those of you scratching your heads as to why I have a Star Wars picture on this post, it is a picture from Star Wars IV: A New Hope. See what I did there?

Tied
We tied for 5th place. Woohoo! Wonder what place we'll finish at next year?
Friday, August 6, 2010
WE WON!
It wasn't an easy win either. In true BarFly fashion we took the Stafford Sandblasters to the 7th game. So we lost the first, won the next two, lost another two and won the final two. Confused yet? Doesn't matter. We won.
Now it's time to take a few weeks off, but I know the next season will be here before we know it.
So thanks to everyone who actually read this little experiment! See you next season!
Go BarFlies!

Last Dance
The end is finally here boys and girls! We have made it to the last regular game of the 2010 Spring-Summer Southwest Houston Shuffleboard League season. Phew! Anyway, it's been quite a rocky road for us, the Crowe BarFlies. We started out a little shaky but found our groove. Unfortunately, that groove ended and we haven't been able to find it again.
Tonight is our final match against the Stafford Sandblasters. It'd really be nice to finish the season (somewhat) strong and with a win, especially since we haven't won a match since June 2nd. Yikes. That wasn't very easy to type. I think we can do.
GO BARFLIES!

Lightning Strikes Twice
We are tied 3 games to 3 against the league champs, the Crowe Wildpuckers. Ken wants to play in the 7th game. But because, and I quote, "we done trashed our score sheet" (Ken), the Wildpuckers didn't realize that Ken had already won 2 games that night. Well, of course we informed them and they chose other players and beat us in the 7th game.
Don't worry, We're kinda used to it by now, but only kind of. It still stings just a little.
We are (finally) down to the last game of the season and the BarFlies head to Stafford to take on the Stafford Sandblasters. Can we finish the season on a high note with a win? You'll just have to wait and see!

Crowe vs. Crowe
Let's go BarFlies! Win! Win! Win!
This is the second to last game of the season, and I've really run out of things to say. Well, except, I'd really like to win. I wish I could stop saying that.
GO BARFLIES!! WOOHOO!!

Two More To Go
Thank God there's only 2 more games. I'll keep this post short and sweet (well, bitter, actually). We lost. We lost in 4 games. Yup, your read that right. We lost 0-4.
Oh well.
Next up are the champions of the league, our sister team, the Crowe Wildpuckers.
That is all.
Oh well.

Broken Record
We need a win. How many times have I said it? How many more times do I need to say it? I hope not many. We have 3 games left in the season, I'd like to win just one. That's all I'm asking. We started the season shaky and now we're finishing it shaky as well.
Our sister team, the Crowe Wildpuckers have already clinched first place with a record of 12-1, with 3 games left! Way to go Wildpuckers!
So without sounding like a broken record (I know I already do) I decided to find out how to say "We need a win" in different languages. Here's what I found.

English: We need a win!
Chinese: 我们需要一场胜利!
Dutch: We hebben een te winnen!
French: Nous avons besoin d'une victoire!
German: Wir brauchen einen Sieg!
Greek: Χρειαζόμαστε μια νίκη!
Irish: Ní mór dúinn an bua!
Italian: Abbiamo bisogno di una vittoria!
Japanese: 我々は勝利が必要だ!
Russian: Мы должны победить!
Slovak: Potrebujeme vyhrať!
Spanish: Necesitamos una victoria!
Yiddish: מיר דאַרפֿן אַ געווינען!
I used Google Translate to find all of these translations so if you see a mistake, take it up with Google. There are a ton of languages available so I just grabbed a handful.
Come on BarFlies! WE NEED A WIN!

What a Shocker
We almost won on a technicality if I hadn't opened my big, dumb mouth. See, in our league, if a player wins 2 games in a night, that player is no longer eligible to play. It was game 7 and Woodie's wanted to put up Bob and Stephen. Stephen had won 2 games that night and I had to tell them. If he had shot one puck they would have had to forfeit that game and we would have won the match. But that's the chicken shit way to win in my book. They put up a different player and won fair and square.
Every game was a fight down to the last point. It was pretty scary when we lost the first 3 games (yeah, we're that good) but we managed to claw our way back and win the next 3. We just couldn't close the deal.

Next week, we travel over to Cozy Corner to play the Cozy Corner Clusterpucks. Our team never plays that well over there so we'll really need some good luck to help us to a victory on Wednesday.

U-Turn Ahead
Well, it's Wednesday again and again it's time for the Crowe BarFlies to make a 180° turn. Coming off of a 3 game losing streak isn't easy, especially after not playing for a week.
Including today's match, we have 4 games left in this season. We still have a chance to get into the top 3 (well, the 2nd or 3rd spot). Unfortunately, it's a pretty slim chance.
C'mon BarFlies! We can do this! Okay, enough of the pep talk.
So I've gone back and forth on how to write this blog. At first I liked doing a game by game recap, but after a few matches, it felt like I was saying the same things over and over, regardless of who won. Now, I just kind of ramble on about how we need to win (because I'm awesome like that). I have no clue what tomorrow's (well, probably Friday's) post will look like.
Go BarFlies!
