Another Wednesday, another chance to win!

Our next challenge is the Cozy Corner I. They are a tough team and we need a win. They will be gunning for us because this will be their first game of the season.

I really, really, REALLY don't want to lose again and start the new season 0-2. But then again, I wanted to win last week and what did that get me? A big, fat, goose egg!

To make matters even worse, Wednesday is the last day of the month, which means usually a late night at work. I'll probably be even more late than I usually am to our games, so my mom will be the stand in captain until I get there.

I really hope we (I especially) pull this off and get our first win.

Grrrrrrrrr!

No. My partner Janet and I did not win the blind draw. No. I did not win 3 Strikes. I think I've found out why I don't win 3 Strikes though. My first round I scored a 15! My first puck went down to a 3 so then I shot my multiplier. It landed on a 3 too!! I used all of my good shots on the first round. I did however win a shotgun pot for $48 so it wasn't a bad day.

Practice in the form of a Blind Draw

My husband Kevin and I host a shuffleboard blind draw at the bar we play for (did I mention that we are on separate teams). Anyone who wants to play pays $5 and we draw cards to partner up. Recently we've only had about 8 people playing but that's okay. You only have to win one game and you're in the money. 



We've started to play a game called 3 Strikes afterwards. 3 Strikes is a lagging game (which I'm not very good at, I'm a knock-off player). In this game you have three pucks of one color - your scorers, and one of the opposite color - your multiplier. The object of this game is to score higher than the person in front of you and if you don't you get a strike. We also use the long or deep foul line for this game which can make it a little trickier. Another aspect of the game is that wherever the pucks are, that's where you throw from. If you play this game long enough, you'll start to favor certain sides of certain boards.


The first person throws. Let's say his name is Bob. Bob throws three blue pucks and they are all in the one point range. Then he throws his red puck and it lands on a two. So Bob has scored a six. Mary is after Bob and needs a seven to not get a strike. She scores a four so gets her first strike. Now Sarah is after Mary and needs a five and so on and so on. The last person standing takes the pot.


Of course higher scores are decidedly hard to beat (well for me) but I would say the hardest score to get is a four. You have to keep all of your scorers on the table past the foul line and get one all the way up to a two. Like with a regular shuffleboard game, there are lots of thank yous thrown around when low scores are scored.


Come to think of it, I don't think I have ever won 3 Strikes. Maybe today will be my lucky day.

First Game of the Season - Did we win?

No. We did not.

It's the first game of the 2010 Spring-Summer season, and the first time for me to be a captain in a few years... and I failed!

Everything was going along fine. We won our first game by a few points and lost our second by one stinking point! It was a roller coaster from there. We won every other game. But so did they! We managed to take the VFW Flyers all the way to the seventh game where we lost only by a handful of points. Most of our games were pretty close with the exception of only a couple. All in all I'd say it was a good first match.

While sitting in front of my computer, I can't recall the specifics of the smack talking that goes on in any give game. The first game of the season has totally jogged my memory. There were lots of "Thank yous" being thrown around when the wrong color puck was bumped up or when one of our own was knocked off by us. Both team's peanut galleries were there to pipe in with tons of useful tips for "helping" the opposing team. "Voodoo" was being cast several times during our game, mostly by me. I'm working on coming up with a new voodoo spell because I only have about a 50% success rate. When I do, watch out!

"Powder" is what we used to call my Mom. Her hands would be totally white with chalk and tonight her arm kept sticking to the top of the cradle so she had to put chalk up to her elbow. It's the most chalk-covered I've ever seen her. When she would high five you a cloud of chalk dust surrounded her. By the end of the night her shirt was covered with chalk spots. But all the chalk in the world couldn't help us. The Flyers were too much for us. So we're tied for 4th place with four other teams. Hopefully now that we've gotten that loss out of our system we won't be doing that anymore.

I had forgotten how much responsibility I feel as captain when we lose. I know I didn't lose all seven games, but in a way I feel I did. If I could have just partnered people a little better, played better myself, maybe we'd be tied for 1st place with four other teams.

But I didn't. And we're not. Now, where's my pain-go-bye-bye juice?
